Eutectics Can't Fend off Cougars

In a tough rematch against the Columbia College Cougars (20-4, 12-2 AMC), the UHSP Eutectics Women's basketball team once again fell short, losing 75-65. While it was an improvement from their previous encounter where they suffered a 29-point loss, the Eutectics still couldn't close the gap entirely.

Right from the tip-off, the Cougars asserted their dominance, quickly racing to a 7-0 lead. Despite a valiant effort from the Eutectics, they found themselves trailing by 10 points after just the first quarter. While they managed to keep it close in the following three quarters, they simply couldn't overcome the early deficit.

In the final quarter, the Euts even outscored the Cougars 24-18, showing some late-game resilience. Grace Beyer was a standout performer for the Eutectics, scoring 35 points (16 of which came in the 4th quarter) and dishing out 5 assists. She also went a perfect 15 for 15 from the free throw line. Samantha Matthews contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Payten Foster added 9 points to the scoreboard. Elizabeth Allanach, Karsyn Morgan, and Caroleina Diaz chipped in with a few points each.

However, Columbia's Mallory Shetley was a force to be reckoned with, scoring 24 points for her team. Mackenzie Hess dominated the boards with 12 rebounds, and DeLaney Horstman secured a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite shooting 41.3% from the field, the Eutectics couldn't match Columbia's efficiency, as the Cougars shot 48.2%. Both teams had a similar performance from beyond the arc, with a 35% success rate. However, Columbia's dominance on the boards, outrebounding UHSP 37 to 20, proved crucial.

With this loss, UHSP's season record now stands at 13-10, with a conference record of 8-5 in the AMC. Their next challenge awaits as they host Missouri Baptist (7-15, 5-8 AMC) on Tuesday at 5:30 pm. In their previous encounter, UHSP emerged victorious with a 72-60 win over Missouri Baptist.
