Eutectics Fall to Eagles

WALNUT RIDGE, ARK. - The Eutectic Women's Volleyball team made the last road trip of the season, travelling to Arkansas for two American Midwest Conference (AMC) matchups this weekend, starting with the Williams Baptist University Eagles of Walnut Ridge on Friday night. The Eutectics fell in straight sets to the Eagles (8-17, 3-5 AMC): 25-15, 25-15, 25-13.

The Eagles immediately took the lead in the first set, pulling ahead 7-0 before a Sophia Michaud kill (set by Jenna Brinson) broke the streak. But, the slow start had the UHSP team playing catchup – a place from which they could not recover as they attempted to chase the Eagles down to no avail. Eventually, the Eagles claimed the first set at 25-15.

The teams had a closer start in Set 2, with a kill by Tera Schumacher (from Brinson) tying the set at 4-4. Up 8-6, however, the Eagles won the next six points in a row to take a significant lead at 14-7 from which the Eutectics could not recover. The WBU team won the final six points in a row to win the set and go up 2-0 in the match.

Down 6-2 in the third set, the Eutectics battled back to a 7-7 tie after an ace from Schumacher and a kill from Michaud, then maintained the tie-score to 11-11. That's when WBU won 12 of the next 13 points to take a 23-12 lead that was insurmountable for the Eutectics. The Eagles finished it off with two kills in the third set to win 25-13 and claim the straight-set victory.

Sophia Michaud led the Eutectics on offense with seven kills set up by Jenna Brinson, who finished with 13 assists. Libero Macy Hendrix recorded 18 digs in the match.

The loss puts the Euts at 3-29 overall and 0-9 in the AMC. The Eutectics will play one more match in Arkansas on Saturday at new AMC member Crowley's Ridge College (7-13, 3-5 AMC) on Saturday at 12 p.m. before returning to St. Louis for their final match of the season at Harris-Stowe State University on Thursday, Nov. 7.
