Eutectics have rough go at Fontbonne
ST. LOUIS, MO - The University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy faced off against Fontbonne in an all-St. Louis area matchup as the Eutectics were trying to rebound from a tough loss the night before to Columbia. The Griffins dealt the Eutectics a tough three-set loss, 25-16, 25-8, 25-8.
Fontbonne started the match strong jumping out to a 4-1 lead. UHSP called a timeout to regroup and came back with energy. The Eutectics found a rhythm with strong plays from Jenna Brinson and Sophia Michaud. Brinson's passing alongside Michaud's aggressive attacks helped the Eutectics tie things at 6-6. FBU would go on a 9-4 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Eutectics came back thanks to Angelica Daginis who had three straight service aces to eventually tie things up at 15-15. But the Griffins would find their rhythm though as they took ten of the next 11 points to run away with the opening set 25-16.
The second set began with the two teams trading three-point swings. Maddie Bock went behind the service line for Fontbonne and the Griffins rattled off 12 straight points to take command of the second set and lead 15-3. After a couple of Eutectic points, FBU took ten of the final 13 points to cap the second set at 25-8.
The third set was too reminiscent of the second for the Eutectics' liking as the Griffins stormed out to a 10-1 advantage. The clubs traded the next eight points with UHSP getting kills from Michaud, Brinson and Sumanpreet Kaur. At 14-5, it was another long run by Fontbonne as they scored nine straight to lead 23-5 before they closed out the final set at 25-8.
Sophia Michaud and Amber Loo led the Eutectics with each having four kills, while Brinson's 15 sets helped with scoring opportunities throughout the match. Ava Baggett paced the back line for the Eutectics with seven digs. Jordan Harpel and Kristen Kaempfe each had ten kills to lead the home club as Riley Watson dished out 23 assists.
The Eutectics (3-28, 0-8 AMC) prepare for their final three matches on the road which all come against American Midwest Conference foes. UHSP readies for a trip to Arkansas next Friday and Saturday when they meet Williams Baptist (6-17, 2-5 AMC) and Crowley's (6-12, 2-5 AMC) respectively.
