Eutectics Fall in Straight Sets to Peru State
ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Eutectic women's volleyball team hosted the Peru State College Bobcats for a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon in the UHSP gymnasium in St. Louis. The Bobcats claimed a 3-0 victory over the Euts: 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.
Peru State's Allie Schneider started off with the serve, establishing a 6-0 lead right off the bat in Set 1. A Eutectic timeout re-centered the Home Team to get the next three points off kills from Amber Loo and Tera Schumacher (both set by Jenna Brinson) and a PSU error. A service ace from Schumacher would tie the score at 8-8, but the Bobcats' Emily Sherman dropped in two aces to take a 12-10 lead that the Visitors would keep for the rest of the set. The bobcats notched four more aces in the remaining points, claiming the set at 24-14.
The second set started off close with tie scores at 1, 3, 4, and 5, before the Bobcats were able to establish a lead they would keep. Down 17-13, the Euts won three points in a row, punctuated by a block and a kill by Hannah Kynaston (from Brinson) to get within one point at 17-16. But, that was a close as they would get, as the Peru State team extended the lead with multiple kills from Kalyssa Fox and Raevyn Russel to win the set at 25-19.
The Eutectics came back stronger in the third set, going up 8-3 after Brinson set up Schumacher for three kills and Loo for one. The UHSP team benefitted from Bobcat errors and a kill by Sophia Michaud (from Brinson) to go up 13-6 and then 15-7. But, the Visitors pulled it together to win five points in a row to get to narrow the gap. Then, down 17-12, the Bobcats won seven points in a row during Russel's service, snatching the lead from the Purple and Gold at 19-17, and swinging the momentum their way for the rest of the match. Peru State won the final two points of the match to win the set 25-22 and shut out the Eutectics in the two teams' second-ever matchup.
Tera Schumacher finished the match with eight kills, as Jenna Brinson picked up another 21 assists. AnnMarie Cates recorded eight digs.
The Eutectics, now 3-20, will continue with non-conference matchups for the next week, travelling to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana for a tri-match with Franklin on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and hosting Fontbonne University on Thursday, Nov. 10.
