Eutectics Can’t Break Gorlok Streak

The Eutectic women's volleyball team hosted cross-town rivals, the Webster University Gorloks, on Tuesday night in the UHSP gymnasium. The UHSP team put up a good fight, but ultimately could not break Webster's 20-match streak in head-to-head competition, falling 25-22, 25-22, 25-13 to the Gorloks in the non-conference match.

After several tie scores early in the first set, a kill from Tera Schumacher set up by Jenna Brinson put the Eutectics up 19-14. But, the Gorloks fought back, clawing their way with a key ace from Ellie Beidenstein and a couple of kills from Eva Tarlos to tie it at 22 apiece. Then they won the last three points, sealing the set with an ace from Tarlos.

In the second set, the Gorloks took a small lead early on. A UHSP three-kill rally (Schumacher, Sophia Michaud, and Sumanpreet Kaur) put the Euts up 6-5, but Webster quickly regained it and pulled out ahead. The Euts strung together a 7-1 scoring run to tie it at 16. But, at 17-17, a kill from Alyssa Jones put the Gorloks ahead for good, winning the set at 25-22.

The Gorloks maintained the momentum into the third set, taking a 7-3 lead before the Eutectics called a time out. Upon returning to the floor, Brinson set up Kaur for a kill that sparked a five-point run for the Purple and Gold that included a block from Michaud and Kaur, a kill from Michaud, and an ace from Amber Loo to take an 8-7 lead. The Gorloks, however, quickly returned to form, putting together some strong offensive attacks to regain the lead at 16-10. With the score at 19-13, the Visitors claimed the last six points in a row to win the set at 25-13 and claim the match.

Tera Schumacher and Sophia Michaud each tallied eight kills in the match, while Sumanpreet Kaur notched six kills with a .308 attack average. Jenna Brinson put up 21 assists; Macy Hendrix and Amber Loo combined for 26 digs, and Kaur recorded two blocks.

The Eutectics are now 2-8 as they head into their 10-team Eutectics Classic tournament this weekend in the UHSP gymnasium.
