After one win and one loss on Friday, the Eutectic women's volleyball team posted another split on Saturday - the second and final day of the Brescia Classic in Owensboro, Ky. The UHSP team picked up a 3-2 victory over the home team to start the day, then fell 3-0 to Oakland City University (Ind.) to cap off the tournament.
The Eutectics started the day with an 11 a.m. matchup against Brescia University (1-7) that proved to be quite the barnburner. After falling behind with a first-set loss of 25-20, the Eutectics came back to win the next two sets at 25-17 and 25-20. The Brescia Bearcats, however, refused to roll over, kicking it up a notch in the fourth set to win 25-19 and force a deciding fifth set. The Eutectics got off to a 3-0 lead in that deciding set and never looked back, winning the set at 15-11 and claiming the match victory.
Jenna Brinson and Macy Hendrix led the Euts with 39 assists and 31 digs, respectively in the five-set match. Brinson and Sumanpreet Kaur were a part of five blocks each, while Kaur pitched in a .227 kill percentage for the team. Tera Schumacher and Sophia Michaud also finished the match in double digits for kills with 14 and 11, while Schumacher also recorded three service aces and 19 digs.
At 3 p.m. the Purple and Gold took to the court against the Oakland City Mighty Oaks (3-5) for their final match of the tournament. The Mighty Oaks showed their strength early on, attacking at .526 and knocking down four blocks to claim the first set at 25-11. The Eutectic defense rallied to set up more of their own attacks in the second set, but the Oaks' blocking prowess continued to stymy the UHSP team with the set going to OCU at 25-16. In the final set, the Eutectics saw even more improvement, taking 51 swings, but the OCU team also upped their game to make 58 attacks and win the set at 25-22 to claim the match.
Schumacher was the top attacker for the Eutectics in the match against the Mighty Oaks, finishing with nine kills and a .214 average. Brinson had 16 assists, Hendrix picked up 13 digs and two aces, while Kaur recorded two blocks.
The Eutectics returned home to St. Louis with a 2-2 record in the Brescia tournament and now have an overall record of 2-6.
On Tuesday, Sept. 3, the Euts will play their first home match of the season hosting St. Mary of the Woods College (Ind.). The 6 p.m. varsity match will follow a 4 p.m. junior varsity matchup. Tickets for the Tuesday matches can be purchased with credit here or at the gate with cash.
