Macon-Ford Leads Eutectics to Fifth-Place Finish at AMC Championships

ELSAH, ILL. – Led by Leah Macon-Ford's two record-breaking wins in the 60m and 200m, the Eutectic Women's Indoor Track and Field Team finished fifth of 10 teams on Saturday at the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Championships hosted by Principia College. UHSP scored 63 points to finish just behind Cottey College (Mo.) in fourth with 85 points, and ahead of Hannibal-LaGrange University (Mo.) in fifth with 53. Columbia College won both the men's and women's team titles.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Leah Macon Ford broke the AMC Meet record and her own UHSP records en route to winning the 60m and 200m dashes. After improving the UHSP 60m record to 7.72 in the preliminaries to qualify with the fastest time heading into the finals, she returned in the finals to claim the champion title with a time of 7.66 to crush the old meet record of 7.70 set in 2016 and her own UHSP record of 7.74. Her time of 7.66 is just .01 second short of qualifying for nationals.
  • Macon-Ford later ran .75 seconds faster than her previous school record in the 200m dash to beat out 16 other competitors with a time of 25.87 seconds and claim the Conference title. With the two titles, Macon-Ford was the high scorer for the Eutectics, accounting for 20 points.
  • Taylor Washington also broke her own school record and scored 16 total points with two All-Conference second-place finishes in the 60m Hurdles and the High Jump. After qualifying for the finals tied for second, she dropped her previous school record in the 60m Hurdles by .03 seconds, finishing second in the finals at 9.25. Washington also took second place in the High Jump with a leap of 1.48m (4'10.25").
  • Adison Plazek and Mariah Scott also qualified for the finals and scored in the 60m Hurdles. Plazek ran a PR of 10.08 for fifth place. Scott finished seventh at 10.37.   
  • Elizabeth Fritzler scored five points for the Eutectics in the Shot Put, finishing fourth of 23 throwers with a mark of 11.62 (38'1.50").
  • Laila Wells scored two points with a seventh-place finish in the 800m run with a time of 2:42.93.
  • The 4x400m Relay, consisting of Victoria Renteria, Payton Burke, Laila Wells, Adison Plazek, broke the school record set back in December with a fifth-place finish at the meet, finishing at 4:28.66.

The AMC Championships concludes the indoor season for most UHSP athletes except those who may wish to take one more shot at qualifying for the NAIA Championship meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 27-Mar. 1 in Gainesville, Fla. The last-chance meet will happen next Saturday, Feb. 22, at the John Gartland Invitational hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
