UHSP Womens T&F sweeps AMC Athletes of the Week

Quite the opening weekend for the Eutectics in their first meet to start their Indoor Track and Field season. UHSP began the 2023-24 season Saturday in Bloomington, Illinois and performances by two athletes were recognized by the American Midwest Conference on Monday as the conference announced their Athletes of the Week for December 4-10.

Taylor Washington was coming off a noteworthy freshman season last year and started her second campaign with a bang. Washington was named the AMC Athlete of the Week for Track competitions. Hanna Burch was competing in her first collegiate Track and Field meet was named the AMC Athlete of the Week in the Field events.

Washington started on the line in the second heat of the 60-Meter hurdles and clocked in third in her heat at 9.64-seconds, .19-seconds behind Illinois Wesleyan's Madyson Synstad for second place. In the 60-Meter Finals, Washington flipped the script and finished .19-seconds in front of Synstad with a time of 9.28 to claim second place overall, finishing .68 behind Destinee Fisher who ran unattached. It was the top time for Washington in the 60-M Hurdles in her young collegiate career, topping her previous best by .11 seconds. Washington was also in the mix in the Women's High Jump competition. She would open by clearing the bar at 1.33-meters followed by successful attempts at 1.38m, 1.43m and 1.48m (4' 10.25"). Her final succesful clearing distance gave her a sixth place finish overall in the High Jump and also matched her personal best in that event when she cleared 1.48m at the AMC Championships last year.

Meanwhile, UHSP freshman Hanna Burch claimed a Top-5 finish in her inaugural collegiate event. After an opening throw in the Shot Put at 1.88-meters, Burch committed a foul in her second attempt, but went 11.16m, 10.54m, 11.06m and 10.63m in her remaining attempts. Her best throw of 11.16m (36' 7.5") gave her fourth overall in the competition, .28m better than Webster's Isabelle Llewellyn who finished in fifth.
