ST. LOUIS, MO – The 2024 American Midwest Conference Tournament got underway on Friday and the 4/5 match-up provided an intriguing pairing. The University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy and Harris-Stowe State University were meeting for the second time in less than two weeks. The Eutectics missed an opportunity to host this tournament contest after dropping the regular season meeting back on October 29 with a 1-0 loss to the Hornets. That loss extended UHSP's winless history against HSSU and that set the backdrop for their tournament meeting on Friday afternoon. This one would not be quite as drama-filled as Harris-Stowe ended the Eutectics' season with a 5-0 victory.
Brianna Williams wasted no time in putting the Hornets on top as she scored less than one minute into the contest. It would be the first of two on the day that Williams would score as she beat UHSP keeper Lauren Harding just :51 seconds into the game. Despite the early blow, the Eutectics would quickly regroup and not allow another goal for the remainder of the half in spite of 14 first-half shots from the Hornets.
The second half is when the home club would put this one away as Annalisa Castro tallied her fifth of the season just 1:18 into the half off an assist from Layla Weston to make it a 2-0 lead. Just under ten minutes later Williams would score again unassisted to make it a 3-0 game. Just :27 seconds later, Emma Auer found Jasmin Kraus who buried her fourth of the season to put HSSU on top by a commanding 4-0 count. Anna-Lena Moritz capped the scoring with 4:57 left with her first of the year to put the finishing touches on a 5-0 quarterfinal win for Harris-Stowe.
The final score was an indicator on how much more Harris-Stowe dominated offensively compared to their meeting just ten days ago. In the regular season matchup, HSSU outshot the Eutectics only by four. This time around, the Hornets unleashed 35 shots in the game to UHSP's 11 and held a 14-5 edge in shots on goal. Harding would make seven saves in net for UHSP with the final goal being allowed by Daniela Nether who came in for the final 17:37 of the contest and made one save. Lena-Marie Winkler started for Harris-Stowe and stopped all five UHSP shots. Winkler was relieved by Andrea Mohn who played an uneventful final 7:43.
The loss drop UHSP to 0-12 all-time against their in-city conference rival as they end the season with a mark of 6-9, matching the program record for most wins in a single season. Their 3-4 mark in AMC play also matches the most wins in a single conference slate in program history.
