Late goal sends Missouri Baptist past UHSP in thriller

ST. LOUIS – A Senior Day celebration nearly turned into an American Midwest Conference shocker. The University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy hosted Missouri Baptist on Saturday afternoon at St. Louis University High School and almost landed their first-ever win over the Spartans. Instead, a late goal from Piper Brown gave MBU a 3-2 win against a team in UHSP that they are now 18-0 all-time against. The two goals were the most the Eutectics have ever scored in a game against their fellow St. Louis-area residents.

The home club led 1-0 after Isabelle Rogers scored in the 14th minute to give the Eutectics a lead that they held all the way until intermission. For Rogers, it was her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

In the second half, Paige Rice and Gabbi Wood would score back-to-back in a span of 3:34 to all of sudden put the Spartans on top 2-1. But just 2:10 after Wood's goal, Alex Hildebrand put one to the back of the net off an assist from Lindsey English as the Eutectics tied things at 2-2 with 33:40 still left to play. For Hildebrand, it snapped a three-game scoreless drought as she notched her seventh of the season.

That set the stage for the dramatics from Brown as she managed to salvage the game for Missouri Baptist and avoid the late season stunner as she scored with just 5:16 remaining on the clock. Hannah Miller, who came in to replace MBU starting keeper Gabby Mattli after the first half, had to make one final save on a shot from Rogers with just under five minutes left to preserve the win.

Lauren Harding made 11 saves in net for UHSP as the pair of Spartan netminders combined to make four. Missouri Baptist sent 20 shots the way of Harding with 14 being on target. Out of nine shots for the Eutectics, six were on goal.

That finishes out the regular season for UHSP (6-8, 3-4 AMC) who finish fifth in the AMC heading into the postseason tournament. It will be a rematch with a 4-Harris-Stowe (7-5-2, 4-2-1 AMC) club that the Eutectics just fell to 1-0 on Tuesday. The Hornets will enter the AMC Tournament Quarterfinal on a three-game win streak overall to face a Eutectics club that they have never lost to. Kickoff will be Friday at 1:00pm.
