Spartans Shutout Euts

On Saturday, the Eutectic women's soccer team travelled across town to take on the Missouri Baptist University Spartans (2-7-0) in Chesterfield, Mo. It was the first American Midwest Conference (AMC) matchup of the season for either team.

The UHSP team came into the contest as the underdogs, having never defeated the MBU Spartans in previous meetings. The Eutectics came close to a win versus MBU in 2019 with a 0-0 double-overtime tie. Try as they might, the Purple and Gold could not break the streak on Saturday, falling 5-0 to the Spartans on their home turf.

The Eutectic defense successfully fended off aggressive attacks from the Spartans in the first half. Finally, with just over eight minutes left in the period, MBU's Skylar Hollingshead took a pass from Maddie Mrazik to score the first goal. The same duo would strike again less than a minute before halftime to make it 2-0 at intermission.

Nearly 10 minutes into the second half, Morgan Hollenbrook scored off an assist from Emma Selsor. In the 67th minute, Mrazik would add to her two assists with her own goal off an assist from Gianna Gore to make it 4-0 – Spartans. In the final 10 minutes of the game, Hollingshead secured her hat trick with another goal off a pass from Jami Theusch to help the home team to a 5-0 lead when the final buzzer sounded.

The Missouri Baptist offense dominated the game with 35 shots, while the MBU defense essentially shut down the Eutectic offense. Katyln Akers was able to get two shots off on goal, but Spartan goalkeeper Gabbi Matli made the saves to secure the shutout.

UHSP goalkeeper Zoe Dixon made nine saves in the game.

Now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the AMC, the Eutectics will now have a week off from competition. They return to AMC action on Saturday, Sept. 30, when they play host to William Woods University (Mo.) at Saint Louis University High School at 4p.m.
