UHSP uses socks and hats in rout of Missouri Valley

MARSHALL, MO – Caeley Doran became the first Eutectic in Women's Lacrosse to ever be named Player of the Week by the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference two weeks ago. Saturday afternoon, she became the Eutectic record holder for most goals in a single game as she poured in six in a 20-7 win over Missouri Valley.

University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy sprinted out to a 5-0 lead midway through the first period. Haley Smith opened the scoring for the Eutectics just 1:34 into the game and then Doran began her assault on the Eutectics single-game scoring record as she netted back-to-back goals in a :38 second span to make it a 3-0 lead. Mandy Xa made it a four goal advantage 2:32 later off an assist by Ella Penke. With all the momentum on the side of the Purple and Gold, they added a shorthanded goal when Doran found Qiu Ottolino for a 5-0 with 7:14 left in the quarter. Atleigh Lark finally got the Vikings on the board with a goal at the 5:53 mark, but UHSP took a commanding 7-1 lead after one as Michelle Le and Doran scored to cap the quarter. The Eutectics commanded the first quarter and not just in the goal scoring category as they unloaded 13 shots to just three for MoVal and won eight of the nine draw controls.

The second period was played more defensively as the two clubs combined for only three goals. Hailey Davis scored a pair in the quarter for Missouri Valley the second of which came off a free position shot while the UHSP goal came from Doran for her fourth of the game.

In the third, Penke scored the first goal of the quarter and assisted on the second when she found Doran as UHSP built a 10-3 lead. The Vikings would cut into that a little scoring two of the final three goals of the period as Davis scored another pair for her third and fourth of the game. Doran found Le for a goal with 6:00 left as the road club took an 11-5 advantage.

Ottolino gave UHSP a six goal lead just :38 seconds into the fourth before Missouri Valley tried to mount a run to try and get back in the game. Alexis Lark scored from a free position shot not even three minutes into the quarter. Atleigh Lark scored :33 seconds later to cut the deficit to five at 12-7 and the Vikings were in striking distance. But Michelle Le put an end to that thought as she had her own personal hat trick in the period scoring three of the next four goals with Payton Burke scoring on a free position goal in that sequence as UHSP put it out of reach extending the lead to 16-7. That set things up for Doran to net the record breaker as she scored her sixth of the contest with 6:53 left to complete the sock trick and surpass the previous mark of five, a mark that she had earned a share of earlier in the season. Haley Smith would score in between a pair of Molly Biermann goals in what was a nine-goal period for the Eutectics on just 11 shots en route to the 20-7 victory.

Missouri Valley netminder Melissa Sandoval was under siege all game as UHSP unleashed a barrage of 37 shots towards the Vikings net. Sandoval ended up making 11 saves in the loss. Brianna Dixon started in net for UHSP and made four first-half saves, but departed at intermission with a five-goal lead. Heidi Shepherd came on in the second half and allowed four goals, making one save. With her work in the first half, Dixon improved to second overall in the country in goals against average at 5.60 and sixth overall in the nation in save percentage at 51.7%.

The Eutectics were fantastic on the draw winning 24 of the 30 attempts in the match and the UHSP defense allowed on 17 total shots by MVC. For Doran, she has had quite the impact on the season in her freshman season. The six goals give her 19 on the season and she has 23 total points. The 19 goals are already a single-season record for UHSP surpassing the 17 that Michelle Le scored last year. Ella Penke and Haley Smith each ended up with four assists in the game as Penke moved to eighth overall in the country in assists.

The Eutectics (5-1) are now idle until they make a trip to Florida next weekend to play three matches They will make a stop in Cleveland, Georgia to play at Truett-McConnell on Saturday and then Monday play in the Sunshine State against Webber International and Warner.
