Cottey College Comets Sweep Eutectics in AMC Doubleheader

In a challenging doubleheader showdown, University of Health Sciences Eutectics softball team faced off against the reigning conference champions, the Cottey College Comets (24-16, 8-4), in Nevada, Mo. today. Unfortunately for the Euts, they were unable to secure a victory, falling short in both games of the AMC matchup.

The first game saw the Eutectics struggling to find their rhythm, as they succumbed to an 8-0 defeat in just five innings. The Euts were outmatched by the tough offense of the Comets, who managed to tally 9 hits throughout the game. Lexi Knoll provided a glimmer of hope for the Eutectics with a 2-out single in the first inning, but unfortunately, the inning ended with her being thrown out on the basepath. Lauren Johnson's early 2-run homer set the tone for the Comets, who continued to pile on runs, extending their lead to 5 by the third inning. Although the Euts collected 5 hits, they struggled to convert them into runs, ultimately falling short as the Comets secured the victory.

In the second inning, Sydney Hinojosa and Makenzie Ness showed some promise for the Eutectics with back-to-back singles, but their efforts were ultimately in vain as they failed to convert their opportunities into runs. Meanwhile, the Comets extended their lead with three more runs in the third inning, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Eutectics. Despite a second hit from Reese Smith in the fifth inning, the Eutectics were unable to mount a comeback, and the game concluded after just five innings with a final score of 8-0 in favor of Cottey College.

The second game of the doubleheader followed a similar narrative, with the Eutectics struggling to generate offense against the dominant pitching of Abigail McPherson, who allowed only one hit over five innings while striking out four. Makenzie Ness provided the lone hit for the Eutectics in the second inning, but their offensive efforts fell short once again.

Meanwhile, the Comets wasted no time asserting their dominance, scoring five runs in the first inning and adding three more in the third to build an insurmountable lead. With a final run in the fourth inning, the Comets sealed the sweep with a commanding 9-0 victory over the Eutectics who are now 11-21 on the season and 3-9 in the AMC.

The Eutectics are back at it again tomorrow when they host William Woods University (15-11, 6-6) and celebrate Senior Day. They play at 2pm at Affton Athletic Association.
