Eagles handcuff UHSP's offense in DH sweep

AFFTON, MO – The Eagles of Williams Baptist swept a doubleheader from the Eutectics on Saturday winning 8-0 in five innings and 5-1. A day after UHSP dropped a pair to Central Baptist where they committed a combined ten errors in the two games, they committed five more against the Eagles.

A four-run third inning broke the first game open as Williams Baptist scored one in the second, but then lead 5-0 to the home half of the third. The Eagles scored four runs on three hits aided by a pair of UHSP errors in that third inning to back starting pitcher Morgan Garner who was sharp. Garner went all five innings for the win giving only three hits, walking one and striking out two. Lexi Knoll started the opening game for UHSP in the circle and allowed ten hits while walking and fanning one. Five of the eight runs allowed were earned. Seven of the nine hitters in the WBU lineup had hits while Hunter Noto, Knoll and Sydney Hinojosa each had a hit for the home club.

In the second contest it was Madison Knight that delivered a bases-clearing double in the second against UHSP starter Emma Henley to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Two innings later Krista Jones and Maddi Altenthal each delivered RBI groundouts to make it a 5-0 game. Henley continued to avoid the big inning scattering eight hits but the UHSP offense sputtered collecting just six hits to their own credit, managing to avoid back-to-back shutouts with an RBI single from Jacy Knox in the bottom of the seventh.

Emberlin Caldwell went the first four innings for WBU picking up the win, fanning two giving only three hits. Emma Henley suffered the loss going the distance with just three of her five runs given up being earned.

The Eutectics (8-16, 1-7) are on the road Wednesday when they travel to Greenville, Illinois for a doubleheader with the Greenville Panthers (15-3). UHSP returns home before the weekend when they host Mission (formerly Baptist Bible) on Friday for a twin bill with the Patriots (6-15).
