Werner's defense leads to National Player of the Week award!
ST. LOUIS, MO - A tremendous week at the net lands national recognition for UHSP's Cameron Werner. The 6'7" sophomore on Tuesday was named the top Defender of the Week in the country by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Just the day before, Werner was named the Defender of the Week by the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
The Racine, WI native racked up seven total blocks in each of the Eutectics last three matches during the counting period and they did not exactly come against easy competition. Werner piled up seven blocks against (RV) Governors State and nationally-ranked #8 Grand View and (RV) William Penn. To kick off the Eutectics four matching within the counting window, he had three blocks against then 4th-ranked Missouri Baptist. He is fifth in the land in blocks per set at 1.17, just .12 behind the nation's leader, Francesco Corradini of Cumberland.
Werner is just the second ever Eutectic in men's volleyball to land a National Player of the Week award. Cole Cwiklowski was named the NAIA Setter of the Week last year for the week of March 11-17.
The Heart of America Athletic Conference continues to be one of the toughest in the nation to compete in. The league took two of the three national awards this week as Missouri Baptist's David Rudic was named Setter of the Week. Matt Pennala of Saint Xavier was named Attacker of the Week.
Werner will get a chance in UHSP's next match at the nation's now third-ranked team tonight at 7:00p as Missouri Valley is in town.
