Brown and Washington Break Records at Principia Relays
The Eutectic indoor men's and women's track and field teams travelled to Elsah, Ill., on Friday and Saturday to compete at the Principia College Relays meet. It was the third non-scoring meet of the 2023-24 indoor season for the Eutectics, where they competed against athletes from NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III.
The UHSP teams brought home two Eutectic records: men's 500m Dash (set by Marlon Brown) and women's High Jump (set by Taylor Washington), and eight personal records (PRs) at the weekend meet.
Newcomer Marlon Brown narrowly beat out teammate Jared Morales's Eutectic record of 1:12.48 in the 500m Dash (set last season), with a new record-time of 1:12.05 for 19th place of 37 athletes competing. Morales also broke his own record in the event, crossing the line at 1:12.40 for a new PR. Zach Brasel and Enze Hao also ran PRs in the event.
Jahari Hines finished sixth of 46 runners in the 300m Dash with a time of 37.24, just short of his UHSP record of 36.60 set last year. Brown's 300m time of 38.11 moved him into second on the All-Time Eutectics list, earning 13th place.
The UHSP men's 4 x 400m Relay team of Brown, Morales, Brasel, and Hines finished in sixth place (of 11) at the meet to become the fifth-fastest team in UHSP history of 3:45.34.
With a leap of 1.50m (4-11), Taylor Washington improved on the UHSP high jump record by two centimeters, breaking the mark she shared with Arianna Buduan set last season. She cleared the bar on her first attempt at the height to finish eighth of 21 jumpers. Washington also performed well in the 60m Hurdles, running 9.68 seconds in the prelims to qualify for the finals, where she improved to 9.36, finishing just .19 seconds behind winner Kailey Johnson from Central Methodist University.
Another Eutectic PR came from Mariah Scott in the 300m Dash. Her time of 50.02 was good enough for 14th place and puts her as the second-fastest Eutectic in the event, behind record-holding teammate Payton Burke (48.52 set in December). Newcomer Paulina Gutierrez-Trejo also improved in the 300m Dash and the 60m Hurdles.
Hannah Burch led the UHSP throwers with a seventh-place finish of 38 competitors in the Shot Put with a toss of 11.16m (36-7.5). The personal-best mark puts Burch as the third-best indoor shot-putter in UHSP history.
The Eutectics will be back on the track next weekend, looking to continue improving as the short season progresses towards the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Championships scheduled for Feb. 17.
