Harris-Stowe powers past Eutectics in AMC match

ST. LOUIS, MO – The Harris-Stowe Hornets made the short trek to St. Louis University High for an American Midwest Conference matchup against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy. HSSU jumped to a big first-half lead and finished out an 8-1 win.

The visitors took advantage of playing with a stiff wind in their favor in the first half. The majority of time of possession was heavily tilted in favor of the Hornets who piled up a 5-0 halftime lead. Leonardo Mori opened the scoring in the 12th minute on an assist from Tim Groenenberg and then Mori followed that up with an assist of his own on a goal from Janik Buch to make it 2-0 just two minutes later on Buch's team-leading seventh of the season. In the 20th minute, Prado found the back of the net assisted by Janik Buch as the Hornets went up 3-0. As the field continued to be heavily tilted in favor of Harris-Stowe, the visitors were awarded a penalty kick after a Eutectics foul inside the penalty box. Djordje Stankovic took the penalty kick and buried a shot to the low left corner past UHSP keeper Wyatt Taylor for his team-leading eighth goal of the year. The Hornets kept the constant pressure on scoring again 2:27 later as Nicholas Wingren assisted Callahan Riley on a goal that gave HSSU a 5-0 advantage that they took to the intermission.

The second half began with the home club hoping for a reversal of fortune with the wind now at their benefit. But Harris-Stowe managed to make some good runs with a number of their reserve players in and despite the wind. Just 6:19 into the second half with Ivan Maldonado in net in place of Taylor for UHSP, Antonio Del Pedregal would score on an assist by Tim Groenenberg to make it 6-0. In the 81st minute, Adefolarin Adigun found Max Kannegieser for goal number seven and just under seven minutes later Miguel Cirulli would score off a scramble in front from an assist by Kannegieser to make it 8-0. The lone UHSP goal would come with just :13 seconds remaining as Tanner Tolan delivered a ball from deep off the left wing that was deflected in by Kalel Mendoza for his fourth of the year to finish the scoring in an 8-1 Hornets win.

The numbers reflected the lopsided play as Harris-Stowe outshot the Eutectics 24-5 including in shots on target, 13-3. The Hornets had nine corners to just one for UHSP. Wyatt Taylor made two first-half saves for the home club while Ivan Maldonado made three in the second half. Kazuyuki Matsumoto played the second half in net for HSSU and made the only three saves of the game recorded by the Hornets. Louis Noisiez played an uneventful first half in goal for Harris-Stowe.

The Eutectics (1-13, 1-6 AMC) finish out the regular season with a Saturday morning home match against Missouri Baptist (9-5-2, 4-0-2 AMC) at 10:00am at St. Louis University High.
