Woodard’s Goal Saves Euts from Shutout at MBU

The Eutectic men's soccer team opened up American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on Saturday with a trip to Chesterfield, Mo., to take on Missouri Baptist University (3-1-3) at Spartan Field. Coming off a loss to NCAA Division I Lindenwood University on Wednesday, the Eutectics hoped to surprise the MBU Spartans with their first-ever win in head-to-head competition againt the Spartans. An unassisted goal from Grant Woodard in the second half prevented a shutout, but the Spartans still earned a lopsided victory over the Euts at 7-1.

The Spartans took the lead with an unassisted goal from Ognjen Bozovic less than two minutes into the game. The home team followed that up with another goal at 7:50 from Lucas Encino (assisted by Sergej Misic) to make it 2-0. Misic would earn his own goal, assisted by Marko Dordevic & Mattia Visintainer in the 19th minute. The Spartans only got one more shot off before time ran out in the first half, but the damage was done: MBU held a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The Spartans wasted no time making it 4-0 early in the second half (51:35) when Mattia Visintainer set up Marko Dordevic to push another one past UHSP goalkeeper Jack Wolfe.

It was UHSP's Grant Woodard who connected with a successful shot on goal (his second of the season), finding the net behind MBU goalkeeper Callum McKinlay in the 74th minute.

The goal, however, did not deter the Spartans from continuing their barrage of shots aimed at the UHSP net – tallying 25 in the game. Three more MBU shots would cross the line in the final 16 minutes of play to earn the home team a 7-1 AMC victory.

McKinlay saved UHSP's other two shots on goal from Grant Woodard and Jacob Woodard. Wolfe recorded six saves for the Eutectics.

The Eutectics are now 2-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the AMC. Next up, the Eutectics will host Brescia University on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at Saint Louis University High School.
