Early second half surge lifts Hornets past Eutectics in season finale

ST. LOUIS, MO – Bennie Amos III scored a game-high 23 points as the Harris-Stowe Hornets used a mammoth second half leading to a 101-67 win over UHSP. The Hornets swept the season series from the Eutectics for the second straight year and have won the last five straight head-to-head.  

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Brock Davis opened the game with the opening triple, but the Hornets promptly went on a 12-0 run capped by a Marco Bruse three-point play 5:13 into the half.
  • With 7:47 left in the half, UHSP still trailed by double-digits down 27-17 when Kevin Jones made a layup. But that is when the Eutectics started to put things together to get back in it before the half.
  • Dwight Newsome made a layup, Ahian Barnett nailed a three-pointer and Davis followed with a layup and UHSP was within five at 33-28.
  • UHSP never got closer than five the remainder of the half as Harris-Stowe led 39-34 at the break making one more field goal than UHSP despite taking three fewer.
  • HSSU exploded in the opening minutes of the second half going on a 24-4 sprint out of the locker room. Seth Chargois had a steal leading to a fastbreak dunk that put the Hornets ahead 63-38 just 5:27 into the second half.
  • Harris-Stowe had another 14-2 run midway through the second half to balloon the lead to 84-49 with 6:28 left.
  • The Hornets connected at 55.1% from the floor making 38 of their 69 attempts. UHSP was 27-for-66 (40.9%).
  • The Eutectics only went to the foul line nine times making six while HSSU was 17-of-23 (73.9%).
  • Ahian Barnett led the Eutectics with a dozen point, Brock Davis finished with 11 and Bryan Odunayo came off the bench and scored ten. That trio combined to go 13-of-28 from the floor.
  • It was the second straight game and 11th this season where Barnett was the Eutectics' leading scorer.
  • Seth Chargois and Marco Burse each had 22 points.
  • Davis led UHSP on the glass with five boards. Hayden Campbell also had five rebounds off the bench.
  • It was the fifth straight game where UHSP shot 40% or better from the field.

UP NEXT:

The Eutectics finish out the season with a record of 8-19 and split their last four games of the season.  They end the year with a conference mark of 2-16 in the AMC. The eight wins are the second-most for the program since the 2013-2014 season bested only by a 10-win campaign three years ago.
