Eutectics Defeat Culver-Stockton in Double Overtime

In the second home game of the season in front of another packed house, the Eutectic men's basketball team won its second game of the season in overtime – this time against Culver-Stockton College (Mo.) in double overtime, 85-80.

After defeating the Missouri Valley College Vikings in overtime for the season and home opener in front of a large crowd on Tuesday, the Eutectics (and the raucous supporting crowd) repeated the effort on Saturday, fighting their way through two overtime periods for their first victory over the CSC Wildcats (0-3). After the UHSP team went into halftime with a 36-27 lead, the Wildcats turned the tables in the second half, duplicating the score in reverse, scoring 36 points to the Eutectics' 27 to finish regulation tied 63-63. A five-minute overtime period did nothing to settle the score as each team scored 11 points. But, in the second overtime, as the crowd roared, the Eutectics edged out the Wildcats 11-6 to win the game with a final score of 85-80.

The Eutectics opened the game with a 4-0 lead and, despite falling behind 9-6 for a brief moment, seemed to have control of the first half. After a couple of threes from Jasmin Suvalija put the Euts up 17-13, the home team only extended that lead as the first half continued. Ahian Barnett sunk eight free throws and added a layup in the final nine minutes of the half to put the Euts up 36-27.

The Wildcats, however, began chasing down the Eutectics upon their return to the court in the second half. After 10 minutes, the Eutectic lead had dwindled to five points at 48-43. Then, in the final seconds of the game, CSC's Ryan Stevenson drained a triple to tie the score at 63 right as time ran out.

The two teams battled for the lead throughout the first five-minute overtime. Brock Davis' layup with 32 seconds left put the Euts up 74-72. But, the Wilcats' Alex Jackson responded with a layup to tie the score at 74 with 16 seconds left in the period to force a second overtime.

Neither team were able to score early in the second OT, but Dwight Newsome eventually marked the board with a layup at 2:46. A triple from Yigit Ekinci extended the lead to 79-74 for the Purple and Gold. A Connor Davis jump shot pulled the Wildcats within one at 79-78, but Byant Odunayo made a three with 37 seconds left. This time, the UHSP lead would prove too much for the Visitors to catch, and the Eutectics earned the hard-fought 85-80 double overtime win.

Ahian Barnett led the Eutectics, scoring 29 points, including 17 points from the free throw line, and added four assists, while also contributing on defense with 10 rebounds and two steals. Jasmin Suvalija and Bryant Odunayo also reached double figures in scoring with 17 and 14 points apiece. Brock Davis was a force on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds while also accounting for eight points, two blocks, and two steals. Yigit Ekinci (7), Moctar Keita (6), and Dwight Newsome (4) also put up points for the Eutectics.

Connor Davis led the Wildcat team with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan Stevenson finished with 19 points for Culver-Stockton.

The Eutectics, now 2-0 so far this season, head out on the road for their next game, playing at Principia College (1-0) in Elsah, Ill., on Monday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m.
