In the UHSP gymnasium on Thursday night, the Eutectic men's basketball team suffered its second loss of the season to the William Woods University Owls (Mo.)(15-7, 7-3 AMC) in American Midwest Conference (AMC) action, 112-49.
WWU's Nathan Schwartze hit the first bucket of the night with a 3-point field goal in the first minute of play. Landon Engelage quickly answered back with his own triple, assisted by Ahian Barnett to even the score. But, then the Eutectics would have a five-minute dry spell, where the Owls extended their lead to 11 points at 14-3 and never looked back. After 10 minutes, WWU was up 26-6 as the Eutectics struggled with turnovers and missed shots. By halftime, the score was 54-21.
The Eutectics couldn't find an answer for the Owls' 63.2% shooting in the game, including 19 three-point field goals. Throughout the game, Schwartze was a threat from the outside, scoring 17 points in the second half alone by going 5-for-9 from the arc and 6-for-20 overall. Dwight Newsome scored all of his eight points in the second half, going 3-for-3 in the period, including one triple.
Brady Bowers was the high scorer for the Eutectics with nine points, while Newsome and Engelage had eight. Barnett had four assists on the night as he and Jas Suvalija and RJ Steckler each scored six points. Justin Patton converted an and-one in the final minute for three points, Kyan Arrandale finished with two points, and Moctar Keita had one point and four rebounds for the Eutectics.
Schwartze led the Owls with 32 points in the game.
The loss puts the Eutectic record at 1-20 and 0-9 in the AMC. Next up, the UHSP team will host the Columbia College Cougars (Mo.) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
