Eutectics can't run with Pomeroys
Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, it was a tough road trip for the Eutectics as they visited St. Mary of the Woods on Tuesday night. In what was the home opener for the Pomeroys, it was a dominating performance for the home club as they came away with a 109-55 win over UHSP.
In a game that UHSP never led, a Moctar Keita layup made it 11-6 in the early going before SMWC went on a 15-2 run to open up a 26-8 advantage midway through the first half. A Jas Suvalija triple with 4:49 left in the half put an end to a 14-8 Pomeroy run making the score 40-19. An Anthony Scales jumper capped the first half with St. Mary of the Woods leading 48-24.
Last time out this past weekend, UHSP gave up a 75-point second half in a 130-90 home loss to Brescia. In the second half against the Pomeroys, SMWC piled up 61 more points, 30 better than the Purple and Gold en route to the big win. St. Mary of the Woods put five players in double figured led by Chaz Birchfield and Cobie Barnes who each dumped in 18 points going a combined 17-for-26 from the floor. Anthony Scales had 14 points, Lincoln Hale added 12 points and Malik Tansmore went for 11 points for SMWC. Moctar Keita was the only Eutectic in double-digits scoring 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line.
St. Mary of the Woods shot 55.7% from the floor and squeezed off 38 more shots than UHSP who connected at 37%. The Eutectics went 17-for-26 from the line while SMWC only attempted eight free throws, making four. The Pomeroys were aggressive in sharing the basketball as they recorded 32 assists leading to a number of easy baskets as they scored 62 points in the paint to 24 paints points for UHSP.
It has been a tough start to the season for the Eutectics (1-6) who are back on the floor a week after Thanksgiving as they play at Fontbonne on Nov. 30. The next home game for UHSP is Dec. 4 against Bethel.
