League of Legends Team Wins Conference Title
The Eutectic Esports League of Legends team won the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship title for the Division I fall season of the 2024-25 schedule. The UHSP team defeated Grand View University (Iowa) 3-1 in the Championship finals, punching a return ticket to the National Championships to take place this spring, while successfully defending the spring 2024 season conference title.
On the heels of their National Championship title in the Spring of 2024, the UHSP League of Legends (LoL) team members James Bamberger, Cole Cwiklowski, Danniel Franco, Alexandre Noel, Alexis Sarate, and Steven Jin (Jay) returned this fall to go 6-1 in the regular season. The record secured a No. 2 seed for the team as they entered the post-season tournament playoffs. The high seed gave the Eutectics the advantage of side selection as they faced Mizzou in the first round on Nov. 13. After dispatching of Mizzou 2-0, the Eutectics then faced Grand View in the second round, falling 2-0 to the GVU Vikings, which forced the Eutectics into the consolation bracket.
Despite the loss, Eutectics regained their focus and set to work demolishing the consolation bracket. The UHSP team took down Georgia Tech, Indiana University- Bloomington, and Northwood University without dropping a single game to qualify for the championship finals, which would end up being a rematch with Grand View. The Vikings would enter the finals as the higher seed and have the advantages of side selection and a previous tournament win over the Eutectics on Nov. 14. In this high-stakes matchup, the Eutectic team rose to the occasion, avenging their loss to GVU to win the ultimate prize: a 3-1 victory to earn back-to-back Conference Championship titles.
Head Coach Fernando Paiva was excited for his team to come back to defeat the Vikings.
"I'm very happy with the way the team improved and maintained a sharp focus throughout the playoffs," Paiva said. "They did what needed to be done and were more than ready for the finals. I'm very happy that they were able to come back with the win on this rematch"
The Esports teams will take some time off from competition over the semester break, but will be back in action preparing for the spring season upon returning to campus in the new year.
