Buxton and Lohman and Gibbs...oh my...lead to sweep of Trojans

HANNIBAL, MO – Lots of offense and solid pitching led the Eutectics to sweeping a Friday twin bill from Hannibal-LaGrange. Caden Buxton had six RBI's in game one and Barrett Lohman tossed a complete game win in his likely final regular season outing as UHSP bludgeoned HLGU 16-2. The second game saw UHSP score three in the first and outhit the Trojans 11-5 in a 5-4 win. Brandon Gibbs went a combined 3-for-7 with hits in each game and saw his hitting streak reach 16 straight games.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

UHSP 16, HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE 2

  • Matthew McDonald capped a three-run first with his team-leading seventh homerun of the season. McDonald went 2-for-3 and scored four times. He doubled in a run in the sixth.
  • Holden Campbell tripled in the first run of the game.
  • Buxton had a day going 3-for-5 and scoring twice. He matched his own school record that he set a year ago driving in six runs in the game. He had a sac fly in the third, hit a 3-run HR in the fifth and singled in a pair in the sixth.
  • Lohman was sharp scattering seven hits in his CG win. He fanned six and walked two. He allowed an RBI double to Isaac Phillips in the sixth and an Ethan Eskew solo homer in the seventh.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

UHSP 5, HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE 4

  • Jacob Grim singled to right to open the scoring in the first and McDonald followed with a two-run single.
  • Cole Arndorfer made it a one-run game with a two-run single to center. He would add an RBI double in the fifth.
  • Campbell would hit his second triple of the day and his club-leading fifth of the year to add two more in the fourth and make it a 5-2 game.
  • Each team failed to capitalize in the fifth. UHSP did not score and left the bases loaded. HLGU managed to score two, but after the Arndorfer RBI double they managed to load the bases with only one out. Campbell had come on to relieve starter Logan Stribling and escaped with only the two runs scoring as the Trojans left the bases loaded.
  • Stribling picked up the win going 4.1IP giving four runs on three hits, walking two and fanning five. He improved to 3-1 on the year.
  • Campbell earned the save, his second, allowing two hits on 2.2IP of shutout baseball. He struck out four and walked one.

NEXT UP:

Expected rain has already forced the final doubleheader of this series to be shifted to Tuesday back in Hannibal. The Eutectics (20-28, 14-20 AMC) will head into their regular season finale against the Trojans still battling for the final spot in the AMC Tournament. On Friday night, Williams Baptist finished out a series against Central Baptist by splitting and doubleheader and also the 4-game series, as each team won two games. The WBU Eagles and UHSP Eutectics remain even in the conference win column with each club having 14. The two games against HLGU are the final two games for UHSP while Williams Baptist still have a full four-game series left on the docket and that begins on Wednesday in Walnut Ridge, AR as they host Mission. The Eutectics hold the head-to-head advantage over the Eagles having taken three of four in their recent series. WBU will have to finish with a better conference mark than UHSP in order to clinch a playoff spot. If UHSP finishes with a better mark or tied with the Eagles, the Eutectics will claim the last AMC Tournament spot.
