
UHSP Wins Final Home Game with Day-2 Split vs. WBU
O'FALLON, ILL. – After recording their first victories over Williams Baptist University (Ark.) and sweeping Day 1 on Friday night, the Eutectic baseball team split Day 2 of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) series with the Eagles (21-17, 12-15 AMC) on Saturday, dropping the first game 7-4, then winning the final home game of the season, 3-1.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
WBU def. UHSP 7-4
- The Eagles took the lead right off the bat with three runs in the first inning off two walks and two hits against UHSP starting pitcher Tristan Calmes.
- The Eutectics scored one run in the bottom of one and three, scoring leadoff hitter Brandon Gibbs both times with sacrifice flies to make it 3-2.
- WBU scored another trio of runs in the top of the fifth before the Eutectics could answer with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Jacob Grim's 2-RBI double scored Gibbs and Caden Buxton to make it 6-4.
- The Eagles were able to push one more run across the plate in the top of the seventh off two hits to go up by three.
- Gibbs would single and steal second in the Euts' final at-bat, but the Eutectics could not get him home, falling 7-4.
- Gibbs was 1-for-1 in the game, picking up two stolen bases and scoring three runs for UHSP. Grim earned three RBIs in the game.
- Calmes put in five innings, suffering the loss on the mound with six strikeouts, five hits, four walks, and six earned runs.
- WBU's Gavin Mink went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Pitcher Coleton Payton relieved starting pitcher Jackson Finder after three innings, putting in 3.1 innings with two strikeouts, four hits, one walk, and two earned runs to earn the win. Jacob Eubanks recorded the save.
UHSP def. WBU 3-1
- It was the Eutectics who marked the board in the bottom of the first this time, when Holden Campbell and Grim reached on singles and were pushed home on WBU errors to go up 2-0.
- The Eagles scored their only run in the top of the second off two hits to make it 2-1.
- Gibbs and Campbell started off the fifth inning with singles, with Gibbs scoring on Grim's double down the left field line to get the Euts to 3-1.
- Solid Eutectic defense backed up stellar pitching by Jacob Grim, who earned the complete game win with four strikeouts, six hits, one walk, and one earned run over six innings.
- Grim also went 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Gibbs (2-for-4) and Campbell (3-for-4) picked up the other two RBIs for UHSP.
- WBU starting pitcher Dawson Cloud was charged with the loss with three strikeouts, seven hits, one walk, and one earned run in four innings.

The Eutectics are now 17-27 overall and 12-20 in the AMC. With one more Conference series left in the regular season, the UHSP team is now fighting for the sixth and final spot in the AMC tournament. After a non-conference doubleheader at Principia College in Elsah, Ill., on Tuesday, the Euts will travel to Hannibal, Mo., for the final AMC series against Hannibal-LaGrange University (7-25, 6-24 AMC).
