Eutectics Drop First AMC Games to Mustangs

HOT SPRINGS, ARK. – After weather forced a two-week break from competition, the Eutectic baseball team returned to competition this weekend with the first American Midwest Conference (AMC) contests of the season. The four-game, two-day series against the Central Baptist College Mustangs (4-8, 2-0 AMC) began on Sunday with two seven-inning evening games in Arkansas. The Mustangs prevailed over the Eutectics in Sunday's doubleheader, winning 3-2 in Game 1 and 6-2 in Game 2 at Majestic Park in Hot Springs.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
CBC 3, UHSP 2

  • The Eutectics took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Deklan Riggs scored off a bases-loaded RBI by Jordan Gonzalez.
  • The Mustangs overtook the UHSP in the bottom of the fourth with two hits, a walk, and a balk off starting UHSP hurler Barrett Lohman.
  • The home team was able to tack on one more run in the bottom of the sixth with a single and a walk to make it 3-1.
  • In the final at-bat, the Eutectics were able to push pinch-runner Jacob Grim across the plate off a walk, a batter hit by a pitch, and a ground-out to make it 3-2. But, the Purple and Gold were unable to score again before the final out.
  • Each team had five hits in the game, while the Mustangs also recorded one error.
  • Ruben Ogando went 2-for-3 at the plate. Holden Campbell and Jordan Gonzalez each had one hit and one RBI.
  • Barrett Lohman pitched 5.2 innings to be charged with the loss on the mound for the Eutectics. He recorded two strikeouts, five hits, two walks, and three earned runs. Kyle Smith relieved Lohman for the final out of the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Josh Albat pitched all seven innings for the Mustangs, racking up 11 strikeouts and recording two walks, five hits, and one earned run.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
CBC 6, UHSP 2

  • The home team started off the scoring in Game 2, going up 4-0 after three innings with eight hits against starting UHSP pitcher Deklan Riggs.
  • In the top of the sixth, two Mustang errors allowed Brandon Gibbs and Holden Cambell to score for the Eutectics and narrow the gap to 4-2.
  • The Mustangs responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead with a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, as relievers Kyle Smith and Jacob Grim shared the pitching duties.
  • CBC was charged with four errors in the game as the UHSP defense had none. But the home team recorded nine hits to the Eutectics' two, with Brandon Gibbs and Ruben Ogando accounting for the UHSP hits.
  • After 2.1 innings, Deklan Riggs was charged with the loss for the Eutectics, giving up four earned runs, seven, hits, and a walk, and striking out two. CBC's winning pitcher Gram Middleton recorded 10 strikeouts, one hit, and one earned run in six innings.

The Eutectics will remain in Arkansas to play the second double header in the series against the Mustangs on Monday, Feb. 24, with games scheduled for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
