Mustangs Take First Two of Three-Game Series

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Eutectic baseball team hosted the Central Baptist College Mustangs (19-7, 4-1 AMC) for the two teams' first-ever American Midwest Conference (AMC) meeting on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader at HSSU Stars Park. The Mustangs claimed both games (8-4 and 14-3) to go up 2-0 heading into the final game of the AMC series on Saturday.

Game 1:

The Eutectics went up 2-0 in the second inning of the first game, when Holden Campbell scored off an RBI single by Michael Morales, who then scored on a CBC error. Two innings later, the Mustangs finally tagged the board with a single run resulting from three hits. After holding the UHSP offense, CBS took the lead, 4-2 in the top of the fifth, off two batters hit by a pitch, two walks, a balk, and a wild pitch. When Brayden Steves came in to relieve Eutectic starting pitcher Tristan Calmes in the top of the sixth, the Mustangs extended that lead to 5-2 off two singles, then scored another three to go up by six in their last at-bat. Robert Uhlmeyer's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh got the Purple and gold within four at 8-4, but the Eutectic offense stopped there. The UHSP team finished Game 1 with an 8-4 loss.

CBC's Gram Middleton claimed the win on the mound, totaling six strikeouts, two walks, seven hits and two earned runs over the seven innings. The loss went to UHSP's Tristan Calmes, who pitched five innings with four strikeouts, five walks, five hits, and four earned runs.

Robert Uhlmeyer led the UHSP offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in the game.

Game 2:

The Mustangs took a one-run lead in the first inning, then doubled that in the second before going on a five-run rally in the top of the third off three singles and a 3-RBI double from R. Dauphinee. With CBC up 7-0, the Eutectics finally got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Malcolm Merriweather, scoring Nolan Harding. The Mustang offense responded with another six runs in the top of the fourth – four against UHSP starter Barrett Lohman, and another two against reliever Cris Resendez – to make it 13-1. CBC would get two more hits in the top of the sixth, pusing one more run across the plate for their final run of the game. Down 14-1 in the seventh, the Purple and Gold rallied for their final chance to prevent the run rule from coming into play. After a Caden Buxton single, Alston Morrell and Jabez King reached on a hit-by-pitch and an error, setting up an RBI single from Campbell. Then, Merriweather's sac fly scored Morrell to make it 14-3. Unfortunately, that is all the Euts could come up with, and CBC claimed the 14-3 win after seven innings.

Jackson Pope pitched six strong innings for the CBC win, racking up seven strikeouts and allowing six hits, three earned runs, and one walk. Barrett Lohman is charged with the loss for UHSP after 3.1 innings, tallying three strikeouts, 10 hits, 10 earned runs, and five walks.

Malcolm Merriweather went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Javonnie Bautista went 2-for-2 from the plate.

The loss puts the Eutectics at 7-14 overall and 1-4 in the AMC. They'll return to HSSU's Stars Park on Saturday for one more shot at the CBC Mustangs in a nine-inning game starting at 1 p.m.
