UHSP Eutectics Drop Double-Header to Calumet Crimson Wave

In a double-header clash yesterday, the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) Eutectics baseball team faced off against the formidable Calumet College of St. Joseph Crimson Wave. Despite a valiant effort, the Eutectics fell short in both games, with scores of 2-1 and 8-2, respectively.

Tristan Calmes took the mound for the Eutectics in the first game and delivered a stellar performance. Calmes pitched a complete game, allowing only 1 earned run on 4 hits. Despite facing some pressure situations, he remained composed, tallying 4 walks and 2 strikeouts.

The Eutectics' defense proved solid behind Calmes, highlighted by a crucial double play turned by Jovonnie Bautista and Alston Morrell in the first inning. However, Calumet managed to capitalize in the second inning, scoring two runs off a couple of hits and an error.

UHSP fought back in the third inning, manufacturing a run through smart baserunning by Michael Morales, who capitalized on a walk, stole second and third base, and advanced home on an error. Despite their efforts, the Eutectics couldn't muster more runs against Calumet's strong pitching.

Bobby Nowak led Calumet's pitching onslaught, striking out an impressive 13 batters in the game, while Tommy Benson closed the door to secure the win and the save. Although Calmes displayed brilliance on the mound, he was handed his first loss of the season. Nolan Harding, Malcolm Merriweather, and Ruben Ogando contributed with hits for the Eutectics in a hard-fought contest.

In the second game of the double-header, Jordan Gonzalez took the mound for UHSP, looking to turn the tide against Calumet. However, Calumet's offense came out swinging, jumping to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning and adding another in the second.

The Eutectics showed signs of life in the third inning, sparked by Robert Uhlmeyer's single and a timely 2-RBI hit by Jovonnie Bautista. Despite a late surge, led by the efforts of Nolan Harding on the mound, the Eutectics couldn't overcome Calumet's offensive onslaught in the seventh inning, as Calumet added three more runs to seal the victory.

Calumet's relentless offense, coupled with solid pitching, proved too much for the Eutectics to handle in the second game. Despite hits by six different Eutectics (Nolan Harding, Jovonnie Bautista, Malcolm Merriweather, Logan Stribling, Ruben Ogando, and Robert Uhlmeyer), UHSP fell short, concluding the double-header with a 3-4 record on the season.

Looking ahead, the Eutectics will regroup and prepare for their next challenge as they face off against Evangel University (6-8) in a noon double-header on Tuesday, February 27th in Springfield, Mo.
