The Eutectic men's soccer team travelled to cross-town rival Fontbonne University's home field on Tuesday night for two teams' final historic matchup before Fontbonne permanently closes its doors in 2025. Both teams were looking for their first wins of the season, and despite an early lead by the Eutectics, the Fontbonne Griffins claimed a 5-2 victory.
The game began with early fouls against Fontbonne, setting a physical tone. UHSP took the lead in the fourth minute when Jacob Woodard converted a penalty kick, marking his second goal of the season. However, Fontbonne responded quickly, with Andrew Kneale equalizing in the 19th minute, followed by Ian Steinkamp's goal just five minutes later, putting Fontbonne ahead 2-1.
Woodard struck again for UHSP, scoring another penalty in the 38th minute to level the match at 2-2. Just before halftime, Fontbonne's Stephen Pryk scored two quick goals, one assisted by Steinkamp, giving Fontbonne a commanding 4-2 lead going into the break.
The second half saw both teams struggle to find the back of the net until Carter Youmans converted a penalty for Fontbonne in the 66th minute, extending their lead to 5-2. The Eutectics peppered the Fontbonne goal with 13 shots in the second half, forcing Griffin goalkeeper Dominic Haggard to make eight saves, including a PK, and hold off the Eutectic offense in the through the final minutes.
Haggard finished with nine total saves for the Fontbonne victory. UHSP's Ivan Maldonado made three saves in goal.
Now 0-6, the Eutectics will next host Brescia University (Ky.) this Saturday, Sept. 21, at 4 p.m. at Creve Coeur Soccer Complex in St. Louis County.
